HISTORY OF THE HOUSE
It was built around the end of the 19th century. It is an ensemble, characterized
by traditional architecture. It consists of the single storey (ANOI and KATOI) and it
dominates the center of the village. The sections with the lower roofs were extensions of
the original middle nucleus (MAKRINARIA i.e. large traditional rooms of an ancient form)
which were attached to them, creating a shape of horseshoe. The stone and the technicians
were brought in from the nearby village of Kritou Terra. Although there were no architects
then, this house was built in such a way that it is warm in winter and cool in
summer-time. The windows are large and placed in the southern part of the house.
Additions were made, as time went by and in accordance to the needs of the family.
We created AMARAKOS with full respect to the traditional architecture, and because it has
been officially recognized as a preserved building (i.e. worthy of preservation for the
future generations). The name Amarakos is derived from the son of Kinyras, the mythical
king of Cyprus and chief priest of goddess Aphrodite.

AMARAKOS is also associated with the name of a person who was
making perfumes
for the worshipping of goddess Aphrodite in ancient times. One day AMARAKOS
accidentally dropped a case, full of perfume, so the Gods punished him
by transforming him into the plant which he was using to make the perfumes.
Since then, AMARAKOS, grows on the island in big quantities and it is
of medicinal and therapeutic use.
